Climate change is the
biggest global health threat
of the 21st century
Welcome
The University of Pittsburgh Office of Sustainability in the Health Sciences seeks to develop sustainable health care practices by decarbonizing our own operations, training eco-literate future healthcare leaders, and researching sustainable solutions that improve human and planetary health.
Highlights
Dr. Noe Woods presents authors Elizabeth Kolbert and Terry Tempest Williams at the UPMC sponsored event, Ten Evenings (Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures).
Elizabeth Kolbert’s book H is for Hope investigates the landscape of climate change from “A” for Svante Arrhenius, who created the world’s first climate model in 1894, to “Z”, for Colorado River Basin, ground zero for climate change in the United States.
Planetary Health Journal Club
Every other month, faculty, staff, students, and community members meet to critically evaluate articles that address topics around climate change and health. This is an excellent event to network and explore research specific to sustainable health care.
One Health Day
We hosted our first One Health Day on November 15th. The event included speaker William T. Mallon, senior director of strategy and innovation development at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), a Sustainable Healthcare Challenge, student poster competitions, and a heat demonstration.
Planetary Health Report Card
The Planetary Health Report Card is a metric-based tool for evaluating and improving planetary health content in health professional schools. Students from Pitt’s Schools of Dental Medicine, Medicine, and Pharmacy completed report cards for their schools this year. Click here to see the final report.
