Mike Boninger, MD

Dr. Boninger is the Associate Dean for Sustainability for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Chief Medical Sustainability Office for UPMC. He is also a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, holding joint appointments in the Departments of Bioengineering, Rehabilitation Science and Technology, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute as well as the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine. 

Dr. Boninger earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering and medical degree at Ohio State University. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Michigan where he became chief resident. A postdoctoral fellowship in engineering and rehabilitation technology brought him to Pittsburgh in 1994. Dr. Boninger received numerous honors, including being inducted into the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Science. Together with Dr. Woods, He serves on the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector.
