Education
The Environmental Impact of Healthcare: How to Heal the Planet and Ourselves
This course is a Flex Week Activity as a part of the Three Rivers Curriculum. Offered in January and September, students who take this course will develop a better understanding of the environmental impacts of health care. Students will be empowered to incorporate solutions into their personal and professional lives.
The core curriculum includes climate medicine problem-based learning cases in the pre-clinical courses and “The Environmental Impact of Medical Waste,” Pre-Clinical Week lecture. Climate medicine topics are being incorporated into the clinical clerkships including a workshop during the ObGyn clerkship on the effects of climate change on women’s health.
The School of Medicine Three Rivers Curriculum is working with the global student lead initiative, The Planetary Report Card, to evaluate and update our climate medicine curriculum.
Research
Student Summer Research Fellowships
We offer students an opportunity to conduct research in sustainable health care as a part of their medical school curriculum. This can be done before the students start medical school through the Pitt Med Research Experience for Prematriculants (PREP) or their first year with the Dean’s Summer Research Project (DSRP) and continue through their time at Pitt with the longitudinal research project (LRP).

The UPSOM Dean’s Summer Research Project is the major source of student stipend support for summer research activity. Students
Pitt Med Research Experience for Prematriculants (PREP)
Accelerated research experience eight weeks before the Pitt Med orientation with a flexible start and stop date.
Longitudinal Research Project (LRP)
This project extends throughout the four years of the medical school curriculum.
